The International Humanitarian Relief and Rescue Initiative (IHRRI), a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting peace, disarmament, and the welfare of vulnerable women, children, and young adults, continues to make significant strides in its mission to lift marginalized communities out of poverty with dignity. As a proud partner of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, IHRRI has been at the forefront of advocating for a ban on Autonomous Weapons Systems (AWS) in Ghana. Recently, the organization took its campaign to the Ghana Parliament, engaging with key stakeholders to push for the country’s commitment to an international treaty banning killer robots.

On Tuesday, 18th March 2025, a delegation from IHRRI, accompanied by Dr. Ayo Ayoola-Amale, the National Coordinator for the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots in Ghana, visited the office of Hon. Ida Adjoa Asiedu, Member of Parliament for the Ayensuano Constituency. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the urgent need for Ghana to join the global movement against the development and use of AWS, which poses a significant threat to humanity, international peace, and security.
The meeting was highly productive, with Hon. Ida Adjoa Asiedu expressing her unwavering support for the campaign. She acknowledged the dangers posed by autonomous weapons and emphasized the importance of Ghana taking a proactive stance in addressing this critical issue. The MP pledged to provide the necessary support to ensure that the Ghana Parliament considers signing an international treaty to ban killer robots, aligning with global efforts to regulate and prohibit the use of such technologies.
The IHRRI delegation included Mr. John Pius, the Campaign Manager and project lead for the initiative, and Mr. Arthur Emmanuel, a director at IHRRI. Both highlighted the ethical, legal, and humanitarian concerns surrounding AWS, stressing that these weapons systems lack the human judgment necessary to distinguish between combatants and civilians, thereby increasing the risk of unintended harm and violations of international humanitarian law.
Dr. Ayo Ayoola-Amale, a renowned advocate for peace and disarmament, reiterated the importance of Ghana’s participation in the global campaign. She noted that the use of autonomous weapons undermines human dignity and the principles of humanity, calling for collective action to prevent the proliferation of such technologies. Dr. Ayoola-Amale commended Hon. Ida Adjoa Asiedu for her commitment to the cause and expressed optimism about Ghana’s potential to become a leader in the fight against killer robots in Africa.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for IHRRI to outline its broader mission of promoting a culture of peace and disarmament while addressing the welfare of vulnerable groups. The organization’s efforts to combat poverty and empower women, children, and young adults closely align with its advocacy against AWS and the MP’s vision of Empowering Women and Youth in her constituency, as both initiatives seek to protect human dignity and ensure a safer, more equitable world.
