Nii Odoi Boye II Appeal Other Chiefs to Support Stop Killer Robot Campaign

Nii Odoi Boye II, Regent and Abusuapanyin of Akpadebu Near Ankwa-Dobro in the Nsawam – Adoagyieri Municipal of the Eastern Region of the Republic of Ghana has appealed to other chiefs of the country to support the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots at the weekend.

Nii Odoui Boye made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at a one-day seminar organized by International Humanitarian Relief and Rescue Initiative (IHRRI), an NGO to sensitize chiefs and Queen Mothers and the people of the Municipality on the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.

He appealed to the Parliamentarians to enact laws to prevent the manufacturing and sale of autonomous weapons referred to as Killer Robots. Nii Odoi Boye Urged Queen Mothers Associations in the country also to add their voice in the campaigning to Stop Killer Robots. He said, “Women and children are vulnerable to such autonomous weapons”. He urged the NGO, International Humanitarian Relief and Rescue Initiative (IHRRI) to continue to organize more workshops and seminars on the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.

In her presentation at the seminar, Dr. Mrs. Ayo Ayoola Amale, the President of WILPF Ghana and the National Coordinator of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots stressed the need for everyone to support the Campaign to save lives especially women, girls, the vulnerable, and the youth. “Killer robots would not end sexual violence in conflicts but would likely perpetuate it, as the fully autonomous weapons would not question an order to rape if programmed to do so,” she said. Also, Mr. John Pius the Project Manager of (IHRRI), in his submission, said the fully autonomous weapons would lack qualities that relate to humans and will be unable to apply human judgment necessary to comply with the law. “Machines with the power and discretion to take lives without human control are unacceptable, morally repugnant and should be prohibited.”

Mr. Arthur Emmanuel, the Ghana Country Representatives of Eds. World Inc. said, “The use of killer robots might make going to war easier; It will shift armed conflict onto civilians. Unlike the military, Killer Robots won’t have feelings and compassion, which can provide an essential check on the killing of civilians.” He added that “the production of autonomous weapons by China, South Korea, Russia, and the United States could only stop if developing countries like Ghana sign the International Treaty to Ban Killer Robots.”

Speaking to Mr. Clifford, an indigenous resident of Akpadebu – Dobro who attended the seminar, appealed to IHRRI to continue with the Campaign so that the concerns of the people get to their representatives in Parliament for them to take conclusive decisions to prevent the development of the killer robots.

In another development, the NGO International Humanitarian Relief and Rescue Initiative (IHRRI) officials visited Nii Boi Kortey, the Chief of Ofankor, to discuss the objective behind the Stop Killer Robot Campaign across the globe. In his contribution, he urged all the chiefs in the Ga Traditional Area to support the Campaign to help save the world from these autonomous weapons, which have no human feelings.

The officials of the NGO, International Humanitarian Relief and Rescue Initiative (IHRRI) visited Nii Boi Kortey, the Chief of Ofankor, to discuss the objective behind the Stop Killer Robot Campaign across the globe. In his contribution, he urged all the chiefs in the Ga Traditional Area to support the Campaign to help save the world from these autonomous weapons, which have no human feelings.
